die Laube
Die Laube (the arbour) is a self-built, three-storey and ten-metre-high, wooden, modular structure in the Prinzessinnengärten. It was developed and designed by Quest (Christian Burkhard and Florian Köhl) in collaboration with Marco Clausen, one of the founders of the Prinzessinnengärten. Construction started in 2015, the building process is continuous. To erect die Laube, no cranes are used and no building knowledge is needed. More than one hundred volunteers invested 10.000 working hours to make the project become a reality. The act of building created a common purpose. So in extrapolation of the principles of community gardening, die Laube’s modular build structure brings about an architecture which is geared towards a practical discussion of social, economic and ecological issues related to the built environment. It posits as an infrastructure for the process of social learning.
